INTRODUCTION:
Manipur is endowed with rich natural resources - the lush green forest in the hills, fertile alluvial soil in the river basins, swift flowing rivers and streams, a large number of fresh water lakes with optimum climate are attributing to the economic growth of the state. The fertile river valleys of Manipur are well suited for agriculture and horticulture, the water bodies and marshes for fisheries and poultry, the foothills for livestock and dairying. Exploitation of these potentials in such a fashion that the returns to the farmers are maximized with minimum wastages can only accelerate generation of adequate productive employment and eradication of poverty in this region.
The Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium has already been set up at the National level by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, and registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act XX of 1860) on 18-01-1994. The Govt. of India has advised all the State Governments to set up such state level SFACs in the style and pattern of the SFAC, of Govt. of India.
Henceforth, with the similar concept & objectives and on the advice of the Govt. of India, in particular for channelising the implementation of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of "Technology Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture in North Eastern States including Scheme" the Manipur Small Farmers’Agri-Business Consortium has been constituted and registered bearing Regn.No.138/M/SR/2000 of 18-11-2000 under Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989 with its head Quarter at Manipur Secretariat Imphal.
The Board of Management of the Society is headed by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Manipur and the Management Committee/Executive Committee is headed by the Agriculture Production Commissioner/ Addl. Chief Secretary, Govt.of Manipur. Other members of the Board of Management and Management Committee are from the Departments of Finance, Planning, Agriculture, Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Manipur Agro-Industries Corporation, and Deptt.of Industries & Commerce, Manipur, representative from the SFAC, New Delhi and NABARD Imphal etc.
